If your furnace is 15 years old or more, you have probably searched for what a replacement costs in Toronto. Here is the honest version. We quote each home in writing rather than publish one generic price, so this post shows what other GTA installers publish, dated and unnamed, and what moves a quote up or down. Use it to sanity-check any quote you get, ours included.
What other GTA installers publish
We read the public price pages of five GTA installers on September 19, 2026. These are their figures, not Imperial Heating prices. Most are guides rather than quotes for a specific home, and most do not say whether HST is included.

Most ranges centre on about $4,500 to $6,500 installed for a high-efficiency furnace. The full spread runs from about $4,000 to $8,000, and modulating models sit at the top. Prices on those sites may have changed since. The same table, with more context, is on our furnace cost guide.
What moves the price of a furnace replacement
Efficiency and stages
Natural Resources Canada requires most gas furnaces made since July 3, 2019 to be at least 95% AFUE. There are narrow exceptions, such as certain replacement situations, so ask whether one applies to your home. In practice, the price difference today is mostly about single-stage, two-stage or modulating operation, and a variable-speed blower. More stages generally cost more and run quieter and more evenly.
Size: heat loss, not square footage
A furnace that is too big for the house short-cycles. Ask whether the quote is based on a heat-loss calculation for your home rather than a rule of thumb from the old unit's label.
Venting and the condensate drain
A 95% furnace vents through plastic pipe and drains condensate. Swapping an older mid-efficiency furnace usually means new venting and a drain, and routing those is where installs get complicated. Manufacturers' manuals warn that frozen condensate can shut a furnace down, so a drain in an unheated space needs protection.
Gas, electrical, ductwork and access
Undersized or damaged ducts, a gas line that needs changing, electrical work and tight access all add labour. Permit fees are normally separate from the equipment price, so ask who pulls the permit.
Add-ons
A smart thermostat, humidifier or air cleaner changes the total. Decide which ones you want before you compare quotes, so you are comparing like with like.
When replacing beats repairing
- Age. Hydro One puts reliable life at 15 to 20 years, and more with maintenance. Past 15, each repair deserves a second look.
- Repair versus replacement cost. Most common furnace repairs run $150 to $600 (see our furnace repair page). Our rule of thumb: when one repair approaches half the price of a new furnace, or you have had two or more repairs in two years on a furnace over 15 years old, replacement starts to make sense.
- A cracked heat exchanger. That is a safety problem and an expensive repair. On an older furnace it usually points to replacement.

If you are replacing anyway, look at a heat pump. The Home Renovation Savings program has no rebate for a gas furnace, but it lists up to $2,000 for a qualifying cold-climate heat pump in a gas-heated home; confirm amounts at homerenovationsavings.ca. Fall or January
Replacing in the fall means you choose the model, compare quotes and pick a day. Replacing after a January failure means you take what can be installed quickly. How to compare furnace quotes
- Model, AFUE and number of stages, in writing.
- Whether a heat-loss calculation was done.
- What is included: venting, condensate drain, gas and electrical work, thermostat, permit, and removal of the old furnace.
- Warranty terms, in writing.
- Whether HST is included.
- Payment options; ours are on the financing page.
