What Our Technician Checks on a Furnace Tune-Up

Every maintenance visit works through the same checklist, grouped into three areas. Parts and repairs are never bundled into the visit. Anything that needs fixing is quoted separately for your approval.

Safety

We visually inspect the heat exchanger for cracks and corrosion, test carbon monoxide levels in the flue gas and around the furnace, inspect the flue and venting, and test the safety controls: limit switch, pressure switch and flame sensor. These are the checks that catch the problems you cannot see or smell.

Combustion and Gas

Dirty burners waste gas and heat unevenly. We clean the burners, check the flame pattern, test the ignitor and flame sensor, and set the gas pressure to the manufacturer’s specification so the furnace burns the way it was designed to.

Airflow and Electrical

We check the filter and replace it if needed, inspect the blower motor, verify the thermostat is reading correctly and calibrate it if not, and tighten electrical connections. Loose wiring and clogged filters are behind many intermittent shutdowns and high bills.

When to Book a Furnace Tune-Up in Toronto

Enbridge recommends a licensed contractor inspect your furnace at least once a year, before the heating season. In Toronto that means September or October:

The furnace is tested and ready before the first cold snap, which often lands in late October or early November.

Early fall is quieter for scheduling than the November rush, when neglected furnaces start failing.

If a part is on its way out, there is time to order and replace it before you rely on the furnace daily.

Signs Your Furnace Needs Attention Before Winter

Homeowner Checks Between Visits

Three things are worth doing yourself between professional visits:

The filter. Natural Resources Canada says to change or clean forced-air filters every three months, or whenever they are loaded with dust.
CO alarms. Since January 1, 2026, Ontario requires a carbon monoxide alarm on every storey of a home with a fuel-burning appliance, a fireplace or an attached garage. Test yours when you change the filter.
The outdoor vents. After snow or freezing rain, clear the intake and exhaust vents with a soft broom, as Enbridge recommends: blocked vents can make gas appliances malfunction and release carbon monoxide.
